Tate Hansen is all smiles as he squeezes a leg cradle on his Century foe during Thursday nights 77-10 drubbing of the Diamondbacks.
BLACKFOOT — A long week of wrestling continued on Thursday evening as the Blackfoot Broncos welcomed the Century Diamondbacks to town on senior night for a High Country Conference duel on the mats.
In the end, Thursday nights match was more of a breather, considering their previous nights work at Minico for a duel with Minico and Columbia, as they crushed the Diamondbacks 77-10.
"Century are a very young team," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "To be able to present our senior class to the home crowd and to be able to come out and perform in their home gym means a lot. It just so happens that this year it was Century."
Brian Goodwin got the carnage started with a 16-1 technical fall win at 138. Tucker Leavitt followed with a dominating display of wrestling as he took his foe down seven times in the first period before finally pinning him with 0:01 remaining in the period.
Forfeits by Ruben Pulido (152), Conner Henderson (160) and Bryant Sargent (170) followed and the Broncos led 29-0 on the scoreboard.
Senior Shawn Walters extended that lead to 35-0 with a pin at 182 before Century got on the board with a forfeit at 195.
Michael Moore then picked up a forfeit win at 220 and then pinned Century's Shawn Ellis in an exhibition match. Jonathan Littlejohn also picked up a forfeit for a 47-6 Blackfoot lead.
Century got their lone win of the night at 98 pounds with a 10-2 major decision but Lane Hunt at 106 got the Broncos rolling again with a pin one minute into the second period.
A forfeit victory for Jared Evans at 113 led to another senior, Kohl Bingham who normally wrestles 113 as he moved up to 120 for senior night. The weight differential meant little as Bingham smiled for the camera with a first period pin.
At 126 senior Matt Bigler picked up a second period pin leading to the final match of the night as fellow senior Tate Hansen closed out the matches with a pin eight seconds into the third period.
"I'm proud of this team. They have come a long way this season," Coach Cashmore said. "I've been impressed with how much they have matured."
All told nine senior wrestlers and one senior manager were honored before the action ensued as Kohl Bingham, Matt Bigler, Tate Hansen, Ruben Pulido, Conner Henderson, Shawn Walters, Austin Mathis, Sky Kniffen, Ross Kay and Abby Horak were each introduced to the home crowd for the final time in their prep careers.
Thursday nights matches came on the heels of much stiffer competition as Blackfoot split their duel at Minico, winning against the host team by the final score of 49-27 and then falling to perennial state title contender Columbia 51-21.
Blackfoot will wrap up the long week with a High Country Conference match at Rigby tonight as the Men in Black wrap up a four day stretch of wrestling in which they battled through five duels.
"It's a long week of wrestling and more than anything it's a week of discipline for the kids," Coach Cashmore said. "They have to show discipline with their weight and be mentally prepared for another match each night with no breath in between. It's not something I recommend but it is something that we are dealing with. So far the kids are stepping up to the challenge and have handled it very well."
After tonight's duel, Blackfoot will be in action on Wednesday when they strap on the wrestling shoes at the High Country Conference Tournament which will be held at Bonneville High School beginning at 10 A.M. Blackfoot enters the tournament as the fourteen time defending district champions and will be gunning for an amazing fifteenth straight tournament title.
