BLACKFOOT — It is often said that speed kills. On Friday night, in the opening round game of the state playoffs it did just that as Blackfoot displayed tons of speed en route to a resounding 62-13 victory over Jerome.
"We're just going to come ready to play and hopefully have a few plays that we can execute and do well with," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "I think that we were just a little bit more physical tonight and that's important in the game."
Jerome actually forced the lone Blackfoot punt on the night on the first possession of the game. From there it was all Blackfoot however, as the Broncos rolled up 389 yards of total offense and 9-touchdowns.
"Kids were playing well, we were in control after the first drive and continued to move the ball especially in the first half," coach Buck said. "The team was efficient and Trae has been doing a pretty good job for us, we have some good athletes on the perimeter and the line did a good job for us."
Garrett Buck got the games first score of the night, powering his way over the end line from 2-yards out with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter. Luis Oseguera, who was 8 of 9 on PAT's drilled the kick home and Blackfoot led 7-0.
After a three and out by the Blackfoot defense, the Broncos wasted little time on the offensive end as Beau Hoskins continued his touchdown binge, carrying the ball around the left end and the sprinted 14-yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
"We just came in wanting to play it safe, know that we have everything covered and just do our jobs tonight," Hoskins said.
On the ensuing possession, Colby Pearson collected the first of four Blackfoot interceptions with a marvelous play in front of the Blackfoot bench and then returned the ball 45-yards to the Jerome 20-yard line.
Two-minutes later sophomore sensation Alonzo Ramos carried the ball into the end zone from 11-yards out and as the Blackfoot band played the fight song, Blackfoot led 21-0.
"I'm just looking to make plays and make the coaches happy," Ramos said. "I'm a sophomore so I have to step it up and not make any mistakes or anything so if I make plays they'll play me more and that just what I've been doing."
After another Ramos 11-yard touchdown Blackfoot was able to get the ball with 1:12 remaining in the first half. With an opportunity to work on their two-minute drill, Blackfoot jumped on the shoulders of junior quarterback Trae Pilster who proceeded to slice the Jerome defense apart on a 70-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown strike to Pearson with :00.3 remaining on the clock.
Pilster finished the night by hitting his last nine passes before sitting down midway through the third quarter.
With the five touchdown advantage to open the second half of play, Blackfoot was able to get nearly all of their younger players into the game but it was a regular who turned in the biggest plays of the half.
Beau Hoskins first struck on the defensive side of the ball, picking a Jerome pass off on the Blackfoot 25-yard line and with a slight shift of gears, sped down the far sideline for a 75-yard pick six.
"We were in cover three and I was just watching the quarterbacks eyes just rolling with him just watching what he was looking at and just drove on the ball, made a catch and then took her." Hoskins said.
After Jerome's first touchdown of the night, Hoskins then received the kick off on the 15-yard line and in a blink of an eye, split the Jerome defenders, sprinting 85-yards for a score, a 55-7 advantage and a smile on the face of coach Buck on the sidelines.
"That is once in a blue moon," Hoskins said. "Never have I seen him smile on the sideline."
Blackfoot (7-2) will now host the fifth district champion Preston Indians next Friday with the winners moving on to the semi-finals. Kick off is scheduled for 7 P.M.
