Broncos swept by Bears
MONTPELIER — For the Blackfoot Broncos Thursday's doubleheader with Bear Lake was the final games of the regular season.
But it will not be the last time the players on the team will don the Blackfoot uniform as the Broncos will be the top seed in next weeks Area C 'A' district tournament in Pocatello.
But prior to finding out weather or not the top seed was indeed locked up, the Broncos had to take on a scrappy Bear Lake on their home field.
Both games were close, but in the end the Broncos were swept by the Bears 2-0 and 16-15 in nine innings in Montpelier.
In game one the Bears and Treasure Valley Community College commit Tyrel Anderson was the difference.
Anderson hit a first inning two-run home run and then pitched seven shutout innings, striking out 11 as the Bears earned a 2-0 win.
Not to be outdone, the Broncos pitching tandem of Zack Later and Braddy Trappett had an equally solid afternoon on the mound.
The pair allowed four hits and combined for six strikeouts. The downside to the day were the six walks and the Anderson home run.
Game two was another pitchers duel, unfortunately if you were a fan of good pitching it was not the game for you.
The Broncos exploded for nine first inning runs and held an 11-2 lead after two. But the Bears rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 14-14.
Each team tallied a run in the eighth before Bear Lake won the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Anderson and Mitch Lauridsen were a thorn in the side of theBroncos all day.
The pair combined to go 10-for-11 at the plate with three double, two home runs and nine RBI.
Dallin Fairchild homered for the Broncos and Trappett had three hits and four RBI.
Blackfoot is the top seed in the west division of Area C and will get a first round bye in next week's district tournament.
The opponent for the Broncos is still to be determined as there are still games to be played this weekend.
The district tournament begins Thursday at Halliwell Park in Pocatello.
