BLACKFOOT — While the state tennis championship is yet to be decided on the court, Blackfoot’s boys team claimed a state title through its efforts in the classroom.
Coach Brint Jefferis said the team has received notice from the Idaho High School Activities Association that it is the Class 4A Academic State Champion this season.
“It’s amazing,” Jefferis said. “How do they juggle it all? These guys are involved in so many things, from We the People and BPA (Business Professionals Association) and choir, band and student government.”
To receive consideration for the honor, coaches submit information on their varsity players, whose Grade Point Averages are then divided by the number of students involved.
Jefferis submitted the grades of his 10 boys players. Their average GPA is 3.903, between an A-minus and straight A average.
“The term is student athlete for a reason,” said William Woods, one of the 10 champions. “Education is a priority. Coach wants us to do our best on the court, but we’re not forced to be focused only on the sport.”
Mark Hudson, another champion, added, “I like tennis because it doesn’t get in the way of academics.”
In addition to Woods and Hudson, team members included Phillip Woods, Marc Matsuura, Tanner Norton, Jacob Harris, Bobby Cannon, Justin Cannon, Tyler Cannon and Ryan Hudson.
