BLACKFOOT — Nothing is more troubling than feeling hungry and not knowing when that desire will be satiated.
A parent splitting the last loaf of bread to be divided amongst the children, unsure of when they will be able to eat again and knowing full well that the food they were given will only dull the aches of unfilled bellies for a small moment.
This Saturday, May 12th, 2012, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will be collecting goodness and compassion of postal customers who participate in the 20th annual National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger”.
The drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation and assists seniors, children and families who may not have enough food after the holiday seasons of food collections end. One in six Americans live in food insecure households. These are families that are not sure where the next meal will come from. One in four in the households are children. 9 million are senior citizens that make the choice daily between food and medication. 37 million Americans are fed by the food drive each year.
When Saturday comes, open your heart, pantry, and mailbox. Place non-perishable foods inside to be collected by local letter carriers who will take the items to our local food bank, pantries and shelters.
