Blackfoot's Taylor Pearson (3) fires a pass to Kylar Haddon (25) during Friday's game against Century.
BLACKFOOT — After a week off the Blackfoot Broncos took to the field Friday night for homecoming, it was also the 4A District 5/6 opener as the Century Diamondbacks came to town.
There were a lot of fireworks in Blackfoot Friday night, unfortunately for Bronco fans Century made more than the hometown team.
Century's Shane Rominger threw for 391 yards and three touchdowns as Century waled away with a 38-21 victory.
The Diamondbacks came out on offense an unveiled their high speed no-huddle offense. On the D-backs first possession Rominger marched the team down the field capping the opening drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Scott Kuhn.
Kuhn scored Century's second touchdown of the quarter on a one-yard run to give Century a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter.
Rominger started the game 10-for-10 passing. He threw for 260 yards in the first half with two touchdowns.
For the Broncos, the evening on offense was a struggle to say the least.
Sophomore quarterback Taylor Pearson struggled throwing the ball all night he finished the night 10-for-30 for just 82 yards. He was just 5-for-his last 21 pass attempts including an interception in the end zone to end the game.
"We made a lot of nice plays, and on defense we made some really nice plays," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "We just can get over giving up those big plays and getting off the field on third down and fourth down and we don't tackle as good as we should at times either."
Blackfoot's defense gave up two, 80-plus yard touchdown passes to the Diamondbacks including and 85-yard screen pas to Logan Fackrell.
While the defense did give up its fair share of big plays, it also singlehandedly got the Broncos back in the game in the third quarter.
Trailing 24-7 at halftime and having to kick-off to Century to start the third quarter, the Broncos defense knew they were going to need to make a stand.
They got that stand when Si Hoskins intercepted a Rominger pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown.
Less than a minute later Camdon Chidester intercepted Rominger after a big hit from Chase Wasia popped the ball loose and into the air.
The Broncos cashed in that driver when Kylar Haddon scored on a 19-yard touchdown run.
Haddon finished the night with 102 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.
"He has to play as much as he can because you have to play your players," Buck said of Haddon. "We have to get people to step up and help him because I am struggling to call a play when we are in a long distance situation because I don't have confidence in stuff. And we have to confidence in something to be able to pick up those three and four yard plays."
The lack of confidence by the team was evident in the second half as the Diamondbacks defense pinned their ears back and came after Pearson.
Pearson spent a lot of the game running away from the Century pass rush. The Diamondbacks ended up with five sacks on the night.
"I would like to run the ball every down, but I don't think it would be all that productive because the physicality of the game tires out the players," Buck said. "We need to get the passing game going because you need to keep the defense honest."
The start of the game was delayed by 10 minutes as a Blackfoot cheerleader was taken from the field by ambulance after hitting her head on the track outside the field. It was announced during the game that the cheerleader had a slight concussion and was doing fine.
Blackfoot (0-3, 0-1 4A Fifth/Sixth District) travels to Preston next Friday.
