Chili feed kicks off Christmas season at Shelley

November 24, 2012

Morning News – Leslie Mielke Treasure Groshong, 7, talks to Santa on Friday evening in Shelley. Santa arrives on a fire truck with lights blazing and sirens sounding to the annual chili feed and tree lighting ceremony at the Dawn Lloyd City Park.  Miss Russet Rachel Coronado handed out candy canes.

SHELLEY – With an escort of fire trucks, Santa arrived in Shelley on the back of one of the trucks with lights blazing and sirens sounding.
It was the eighth annual chili feed and light ceremony on Friday at the Dawn Lloyd City Park in Shelley.
Berta Dargie, Bubba Ricker, Chuck Lloyd, Jackie Hanson, Micks and Warner were the chili makers. Three or four gallons of each chili were available for all takers. The chili eaters voted to determine the winning entry.
This year, of the six chili makers, three were returning champions, said organizer Diane Mickelsen.
“We’ve had a better turnout for Santa’s arrival since we included a chili feed,” she said.
“This is a real tradition for Shelley,” said Mayor Eric “Swede” Christensen. “What a great way to start Christmas and finish Thanksgiving.
“It brings the community together,” the mayor said. “It’s also the first time this year many of these kids will see Santa.”
The chili feed and tree lighting ceremony were sponsored by the City of Shelley and the Kiwanis Club.
