Cold shooting night dooms Broncos
BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Broncos hosted the Hillcrest Knights on the basketball court Wednesday evening looking to even the season series on their home court. Unfortunately, the Knights were not cooperating in that plan as they turned in a big second quarter to take a double-digit lead that they never relinquished in the 64-45 downing of the Broncos.
"Basketball is a game of runs," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "When you don't stop their run and then don't go on a run of your own it makes it very difficult to win basketball games. Hillcrest are a good team though. You can't take anything away from them."
Blackfoot took to the court with the return of Alonzo Ramos but unfortunately, they were without Paul Cannon who injured a shoulder in the Snake River game last week. Despite the short bench and the different rotation, the Broncos started strong and after a McKye Watt three point basket just ten seconds into the second quarter, the Broncos led 17-10.
The irons went cold after that shot, much to the chagrin of the Blackfoot faithful, as the Broncos did not score another point until Aaron Vails basket in the lane with :49 remaining in the half.
During the cold spell, Hillcrest mounted a 19-0 run which enabled the Knights to head to the locker room with a 30-19 bulge.
"We had some good looks. We had the shots," Coach Hale said. "We just didn't make them when we had them. I think that game wise we were getting everything that we wanted in our offensive sets, probably better than we have all year, but we just went through too many stretches without any baskets."
Blackfoot played the Knights nearly even in the second half but every time the Broncos cut the deficit to single digits, the Knights had an answer to stave off any thoughts of a Bronco comeback.
"We had the lead down to 8 or 9 and then we get 4 turnovers in a row," Coach Hale said. "I was thinking alright, here we go but we just couldn't convert on the other end."
Blackfoot was led on the evening by Watt and his 14 points. Tyler Cannon had a good evening with 9 points while Alonzo Ramos and Aaron Vail each tallied 8 in the loss.
Blackfoot (2-3) will open High Country Conference play on Friday when they host Bonneville at 7:30 p.m.
