Cougars cap comeback with walk-off win over Huskies 12-11

April 25, 2014

Firth’s Ashley Sanders singles to left field during the fifth inning of the Cougars game with North Fremont Friday at Firth High School.

FIRTH — One thing can be said about the Firth High School softball team; they don't ever give up.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning Friday against North Fremont the Cougars found themselves trailing 9-3 after leading earlier in the game.
But with the ever looming threat of rain the Cougars were playing with a purpose, to win the game.
Firth scored eight runs over the next two innings to take an 11-9 lead.
The lead was short lived as North Fremont tied the game in the top of the sixth.
But Firth starting pitcher Ashley Sanders sent the Cougar faithful home happy with a walk-off double to right center field in the bottom of the eighth as Firth earned a 12-11 win Friday afternoon at Firth High School.

Sanders doubled on the second pitch of her at-bat driving home Shelby Pfeifer who started the extra frame on second base per the extra inning rule in high school softball.
The game-winning doubled capped a wild game that saw the score go back and fourth and a six-run deficit erased by the Cougars.
After scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 with an RBI double by Pfeifer being the big blow, North Fremont came right back in the second to take the lead.
The Huskies scored four runs in the second and one in the third to lead 6-3.
North Fremont added three more runs in the fourth to build what looked like a comfortable 9-3 lead.
Firth had other ideas.
The Cougars made the most of a leadoff walk to Lindsey Jenkins and a double by Hannah Grebsted when Rosie Skarr hit a ground rule double to left center field to drive home Jenkins and Grebsted.
Pfeifer followed two batters later with an RBI single of her own to cut the Firth deficit to 9-6.
The Cougars exploded in the fifth scoring five runs on six hits including a two-RBI single by Grebsted and three other RBI hits to build an 11-9 lead.
But after the Huskies tied the game in the sixth, Firth held them scoreless including working out of a first and third and one out jam in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Pfeifer finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI for Firth. Skarr and Sanders each added two hits and two RBI.
Firth plays at West Jefferson on Tuesday.
