Cougars maul Trojans 70-6
POCATELLO — Idaho State's Holt Arena has seen it's fair share of blow outs over the years and on Thursday evening another was added to the long list as the Firth Cougars mauled the Trojans of Wendell with a 70-6 2A state quarterfinal victory.
"I thought that we had a very solid game plan and the kids executed what we had planned," Firth head coach Keith Drake said.
And execute the Cougars did as Jake Orme was an efficient 10 of 13 passing for 217 yards and five touchdowns. Connor Montgomerey had 116 rushing yards on just five carries and Mitch Orme provided the third portion of the triple threat with 142 receiving yards on five catches which included a pair of touchdowns.
The defense did their part as well when they set the tone with a quick three and out to begin the contest.
"Our defense are doing a good job of doing the fundamentals," Coach Drake said. "They are tackling well and they did a better job of pass coverage. The kids are believing in our game plans and they're executing it almost flawlessly this time."
On Firth's second offensive play the Cougars capitalized when Jake Orme sprinted through the Trojan defense for a 56 yard touchdown run and before many of the Firth crowd had found their seats, the men in blue led 7-0.
"Jake is almost like another offensive coordinator out there for us," Coach Drake said. "It always hasn't been this rosy, we as a coaching staff expect him to know everything and get everything lined up right and for the most part he does a good job. I'm proud of him."
After another defensive stand the Cougar offense went back to work following a fine punt return from Mitch Orme which set up the Cougars deep in Wendell territory. Two plays later it was Jake Orme once again as he took a quarterback draw up the middle from five yards out for a 14-0 lead.
Three minutes later the Cougars went to the air with the Orme's, Jake and Mitch connecting on a 42 yard pitch and catch and the route was on.
Firth added three more touchdowns in the second quarter with a ten yard pass to Dalton Date a one yard touchdown plunge from Nick Anderson and on a fourth and seventeen, Mitch Orme took a shovel pass all the way to pay dirt for a 49 yard touchdown.
Firth came out of the half time break with their collective feet squarely on the gas peddle as they scored on the opening possession when Nick Anderson entered the end zone for the second time on the evening when he took a swing pass from Jake Orme 13 yards to pay dirt.
On the ensuing defensive possession Mitch Orme picked off a pass by Alex Swainston and then raced 67 yards down the Wendell sideline for the pick six and a 56-0 Firth lead.
The starting unit closed out the third quarter with another Dalton Cate touchdown catch and heading to the fourth quarter Firth led 64-0 on an evening in which they had out gained the Trojans 490-65 through three quarters of play.
Firth's junior varsity then took to Holt Arena turf and they wasted little time putting their stamp on the game with their time in the spot light as they marched the ball down the field behind the strong running of Kadon Miles and the solid quarterback play of Jackson Thompson. The young guns got on the board with a Lucus Orme touchdown catch from Thompson for Firth's final tally of the night.
Firth (10-0) will play the winner of West Side-New Plymouth next week at a date and time to be determined.
