Cougars remain unbeaten with 9-0 win over West Jefferson

FIRTH — Behind the strong arm of freshman hurler Conner Montgomery, the Firth Cougars remained unbeaten on the year with a solid 9-0 conference win over West Jefferson on Thursday afternoon.
Montgomery set the tone early as he needed just 10 pitches to sit down the Panther hitters in the first two innings combined.
That dominance continued throughout the contest as the talented youngster picked up a complete game win as he scattered just 3 hits on the afternoon.
"Pitching and defense really has been coming through for us," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "Conference game and in the past we've had just one of two pitchers and that's it. When you have a Logan Wynn he would be throwing our conference game but today we stick a freshman on the mound today and he did a pretty good job and overall I'm pretty pleased."
The same could not be said for the West Jefferson hurler however as the Firth offense jumped on his offerings early and often.
Brenner Coughlan wore a pitch to open the game and then quickly stole second base to set the table. Three consecutive hits by Logan Wynn, Kory Andersen and Ben Cornia followed, staking the Cougars to a 3-0 lead.
"We still need to work on our hitting, I felt that we didn't get as many hits as we should have had today because we were swinging at pitches we shouldn't and watching pitches that we should have been swinging at," coach Adams said. "We need to do a better job at that."
Firth tacked on a lone run in the home half of the second inning as Kris Lockyer ripped a 1-out single and later scored for the 4-0 lead.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 4 runs in the frame despite only getting 1 hit. Five walks and a hit batsman was the catylist behind the uprising as the Cougars showed patience at the plate. Montgomery helped his own cause with the lone hit in the frame, a 2-RBI single that plated Dalton Cate and Brenner Coughlan.
Firth (7-0, 2-0) will travel to Hillcrest next Tuesday before they take on the Malad Dragons at Malad on Wednesday.
