Cougars soar over Panthers 13-3

April 5, 2012

Braden Boyer lays out for a diving catch in right field during Thursday's 13-3 Firth win over West Jefferson.

FIRTH — There's nothing better than opening the conference slate with a win and for the Firth Cougar baseball squad, that is exactly what they did on Thursday afternoon as they ten run ruled their long time nemesis West Jefferson 13-3 in 6 innings.
"It's nice to start out the conference with a win," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "We have a lot of new faces in the dugout and it was good to start out with a win."

Brenner Coughlan got the nod on the bump for the Cougars and the dynamo turned in a solid performance as he struck out 11 Panthers and scattered 4 hits in the complete game victory.
Offensively the Cougars picked up a pair of first inning runs as Heber Bodily reached base on a single and then scored moments later courtesy of a Connor Montgomery RBI triple. Montgomery trotted home via a Taylor Richards RBI single and the Cougars led 2-0.
"We put the ball in play and were able to get a few timely hits," Coach Adams said.
West Jefferson responded with a run in the top of the second making the score 2-1 Cougars, a score that stood until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Firth broke the game open in that fifth inning as they trotted 10 batters to the plate in a 6 run uprising.
Bodily, Montgomery and Richards each provided hits in an inning that the Cougars showed great patience at the plate as they worked the count for 4 free passes.
Firth then added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with Braden Boyer picking up the game sealing hit as he plated the thirteenth run of the game with a line drive RBI single to left.
"I felt that we took a little too long to get going today," Coach Adams said. "We need to do a better job of coming out ready to play right from the first pitch. We made a couple physical errors and a ton of mental ones but we will continue to work on those."
Firth (5-1, 1-0) will hit the diamond again today as they travel to Bonneville for a double header against the Bee JV team. First pitch is scheduled for 4 P.M.
