FIRTH â€” Firth started slowly, but eventually sped to a 52-34 Nuclear Conference win over Salmon in girls' basketball on Wednesday.
Kayla Jensen scored 15 points and Bailey Nelson added 14 for the Cougars (2-2, 11-4). Shantel Miller led Salmon with 12 points.
Firth managed only one basket and a free throw in the first quarter, while Salmon (1-3, 8-6) had just two baskets and a free throw.
The Cougars tightened their defense in the second quarter, shutting out the Savages for nearly six minutes. During that time, Nelson had four of her points. Jordyn Park started the run with a pair of free throws. Natalie Jolley, Ashley Carpenter and Jensen had the other baskets.
The Cougars frustrated the Savages throughout the game, using a pressure defense to create turnover after turnover.
"Defensively (the game) was a thing of beauty," said Firth coach Sharla Cook. "We did an excellent job of running our defensive scheme.
"We did a good job of getting the ball loose," Cook said. "We did a nice job of creating opportunities."
Firth will entertain Ririe at 7 p.m. on Friday.
