Cougars win another 2A Nuclear Conference Title

February 23, 2012

The Firth Cougars celebrate their 2012 Nuclear Conference Title on Wednesday evening.

ST. ANTHONY — The Firth Cougars closed out their 2A sixth district championship game with a convincing 13-2 run over the final four minutes of the fourth quarter to down the Butte Pirates 69-58 on Wednesday evening at South Fremont High School.
“This win shows how hard we worked everyday, and it feels really good,” junior Mitch Orme said.
For the seniors this means keeping a tradition alive as the Cougars have become a regular in district championship games and they will be shooting for their fifth state title in six years.
“It feels really good getting the District title again," senior Jacob Fielding said. "I have been here since I was a little freshman so it is like keeping up the tradition.”
The night was filled with intense plays which led to a close game with Butte County outscoring Firth 18-12 in the first quarter and Firth returning the favor with an 18-12 second quarter which allowed them to go into half time with a tied game, 30-30, after Brenner Coughlan made a three point basket as the buzzer sounded.
The third quarter was a tug of war game as both teams tied up scores six times throughout the quarter, but the Pirates came out ahead by one, 47-46.
Determined for the win the Cougars stepped up and played their Firth basketball game that they are known for as they pulled away late for the 11 point victory.
“We played a tight game. They played really hard and we had some foul trouble that kind of hurt us,” Firth head coach Scott Adams said, “I am really proud of the team. They all did great.”
The top scorers for the night for Firth were Brenner Coughlan and Austin Leslie with 20 points each.
“Everyone played great tonight. It was a close game,” senior Coughlan said, “Thanks to the coaches for teaching us.”
The Cougars will play again next Thursday in Boise at 6:15 against the champion from the fifth district in the first round of the state tournament. The game will be held at Centennial High School, which has become a home away from home for the Cougars.
“I expect us to go into state and try our best, and hopefully go out with a bang,” Leslie said.
