D-backs take down Lady Broncos 68-55

January 22, 2014

Blackfoot’s Morningrose Tobey drives between Century’s Aliea Son, #11, and Rian Rawlings on the way to the basket during the third quarter of their game at Century High School on Tuesday.

POCATELLO — Two words describe the Blackfoot Lady Broncos 68-55 loss to the top ranked team in 4A the Century Diamondbacks.
Those words, foul trouble.
From the opening tip the Lady Broncos struggled defending the paint and dealing the with Diamondbacks 6-foot-2 post Henny Hearn.

Just like the meeting in Blackfoot two weeks ago Hearn dominated the post putting all of the Broncos post players in foul trouble.
But Hearn was not the only aggressive one for the Diamondbacks on the night, six different Diamondbacks had at lead one free throw attempt in the game.
"That big there (Hearn) we had just no answer for her," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "We could not push her, we were doing those things to her but it was not working and all three of our bigs had a foul on them. Without them on the floor we have to back off and not play our pressure defense."
Despite the foul trouble the Broncos only trailed 29-22 at halftime.
The turning point in the game was the opening four minutes of the third quarter.
Century came out aggressive and went on a 13-4 run sparked by six points from Sarah Holt and capped off with a layup from Hearn.
The seven-point halftime deficit quickly ballooned to 16. The deficit swelled to as much as 20 midway through the final quarter.
With some starters in foul trouble, Smith had to go to his bench and get some minutes from some sparing;y used players. each of those players contributed.
Kelsey Baguely contributed a basket and couple of big blocks and freshman Anicia Luna got some valuable minutes allowing some of the starters a bit of a rest.
"While the result was not what we wanted, we got some very valuable minutes for some kids," Smith said. "Anicia Luna played a quarter and a half, Kelsey Baguley played well on defense and helped out, we are starting to see some contributions from bench and that is something we really need going forward."
Blackfoot began to press late in the fourth quarter allowing Cassandra Clarke and Morningrose Tobey to more active driving to the basket.
Tobey scored a game-high 21 points, Clarke added 19. But in the end Holts's 20 and Hearn's 19 were too tough to overcome.
"We are moving in the right direction," Smith said. "We have three big games still to go and we are close to taking that number two seed."
