The Demolition Derby got off to an atypical start Saturday night at the closing night of the Eastern Idaho State Fair.
Instead of the sound of engines roaring, there was the sound of absolute silence as hundreds of spectators paid a moment of reverence, thought and respect to several fallen Bingham County residents who were taken tragically over the last several weeks.
The sound of revving engines followed the tribute. Dust filled the air as the cars piled into the arena and began crashing into each other. The sound of crunching metal and the smell of burning oil soon accosted the senses. The sound of the cars was drowned out only momentarily by the cheers of the crowd. One by one the cars slowly dropped off until only one remained… champion of the demolition derby.
Satruday night's event was sold out an hour before the scheduled event time. With over 49 cars in the lineup the Demolition Derby is an East Idaho favorite which always signals the close of fair week.
