Don Taylor McCandless, 83
Don was born at Lewisville to Joseph H. and Donna Taylor McCandless, and joined three brothers, Lyman, Ray and Truman. Don graduated from Midway High School in 1945 and entered the Coast Guard for a short time and then the Maritime Service. He was in the 8th Army during the occupation of Japan and the 6th Army during the Korean Conflict.
Don helped his father farm at Menan and then farmed with family in Montana. A few years later he bought a farm in partnership with a brother where they raised grain and 800 acres of alfalfa, sheep, Herefords, Angus and Charolais cattle. The cattle’s summer range was in the Centennial Valley of southern Montana over the mountains west of Henry’s Lake, where the headwaters of the Missouri River starts.
From Dillon, Mont., over 1,200 cows and their calves were trucked in the spring to the Centennial Valley, and in the fall they trailed the 114 miles back through Dillon to the winter pasture. It was one of the longest remaining annual cattle drives in the West.
After 13 years, Don sold out to his brother and moved his family to farm west of Blackfoot to live among some of God’s choicest people. Farming was successful for several years and then hail, frost, rabbits, etc. got in the way and it was time for new beginnings. He met life’s continued challenges with dignity and perseverance.
Don is survived by his wife Norma of 58 years, daughters Brenda, Alison, Nyla (Lloyd), sons Reed [Kristy] and Jay (Angela), 23 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Nita (Steve) and son Von (Suzanne), granddaughter Kelly Marie and great-grandson Scott Lawrence.
We express heartfelt appreciation and love to our family of caregivers, neighbors and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Blackfoot Northwest LDS Stake Center at 740 West 100 North, the corner of Pioneer Road and Moreland Riverside Road (1 mile north of Riverside Boot & Saddle).
