Doris A. Smith, 97
Doris Andersen Smith, 97 a lifelong resident of Blackfoot, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 9, 2011.
Doris was born on Feb. 18, 1914, in Blackfoot. Her parents were James Henry Andersen and LeVerna Call Andersen. She attended Blackfoot High School and graduated in 1932. She attended college in Pocatello for two years and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Gorveland for two years. She married Thomas B. Smith In Pocatello on June 21, 1936.
Doris gave up career to be a full-time wife and mother. Her first child was Diane LeVerna, her second was Tom, Jr., her third and her last was James Andersen. She and Tom, Sr. loved being parents and enjoyed every minute with their family.
Doris was very involved in community activities, including: member of the Library Board, member of the Blackfoot Ladies Golf Association, Beta Sigma Phi, numerous bridge clubs and a member of the Idaho Falls Country Club. She also enjoyed supporting her husband in all of his club associations.
She was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She especially enjoyed being a member of the 6th Ward where she recently served as a Visiting Teacher supervisor.
She is survived by her son Tom, Jr. (Roberta) and her daughter Diane; grandsons: Trevor (Margaret), James (Laurie) and Shane and two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Tatym.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, Sr., one son, Lt. James A. Smith; her parents; one brother, James Merritt Andersen; and three sisters, Lena, Mary and Margaret.
In her spare time Doris liked to travel, knit, read, golf, play bridge and exercise. She also loved parties and family get-togethers.
Funeral services will be held at the Blackfoot 6th Ward LDS Church, 660 Teton, on Friday, April 15, 2011, at 11 a.m.
The family will meet with friends and family before the services from 9:30 to 10:45.
Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Blackfoot Aspen Home Health and Hospice and “Heartwork Connections” for the wonderful care given to Doris. This made it possible for her to stay comfortable in her own home.
