Eagles trip up Panthers

February 18, 2011

Keegan Keller draws contact from the Marsh Valley defender during first half action at Pocatello High School on Friday evening.

POCATELLO — Who says that the fifth district doesn't call fouls? On Friday night, the officials blew the whistle 48 times, 30 of those against Snake River, as the Panthers fell to Marsh Valley 53-45 in the first round of the 3A fifth district tournament.
"It was one of those nights," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "We still had our chance which is all that you can ask for."
Marsh Valley took advantage of the whistles, knocking down 31 of 40 free throw attempts while Snake River were only able to connect on 13 of the 20 charity tosses that they received.
Free throws aside, the real damage was that the early foul trouble that the Panthers were in caused them to play timid at times and certainly the frustration seen on the Snake River side of the court manifested itself with a cold shooting performance from the field.
"Our foul trouble really hurt us because the kids were afraid to do stuff on both the offense and defense," coach Coombs said. "The other thing that I thought was a big difference was we didn't rebound. We were getting killed on the back side and we kept telling the kids to box out the back side and they just went out and got the ball from us."
Despite losing 3 players who fouled out of the contest, Snake River still had their chances to win the ball-game as they led for a full three quarters of the contest.
Unfortunately, Marsh Valley was able to wrestle the lead away in the fourth quarter and even though they were only able to connect on 1 field goal in the final stanza, hot free throw shooting was more than enough to keep the Panthers at arms length.
Snake River is far from done on the season as they will look to rebound against American Falls next Tuesday at Pocatello High School with tip off scheduled for 5:30 P.M.
"It's not over, district tournament it's time to come and play," coach Coombs said. "We just got to get this out of our system and move on."
