Eight run eighth dooms Lady Panthers to first season loss
Janalyce Turpin slides into third as head coach Kay Martin looks on.
RIVERSIDE — The game was much more winnable than the final 13-5 score indicated on Tuesday evening as the Snake River Lady Panthers dropped their first game of the season in the eight run, extra inning defeat at the hands of a tough Teton squad.
"We should have won this game," Snake River head coach Kay Martin said. "We get ahead in the sixth inning and then just didn't make the plays that we needed to make to get the job done. When the pressure was on, we just didn't make the plays when we needed them."
The game was a see-saw affair through the first seven innings of play with the Lady Panthers getting solo runs in the first and second innings for an early 2-0 advantage.
Teton battled back for a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game and then took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Snake River battled back in the home half of the sixth inning however as Allysa Delaney swatted a 2RBI single to right field and Kara Polatis roped her second double of the day. Polatis was huge at the plate as she finished 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles in the loss.
Teton were able to put the lead off runner on in the top of the seventh but it looked as if Snake River were going to escape the threat unscathed as they picked up two quick outs. A seeing eye single to right field scored the tying run however sending the game into bonus frames.
The extra inning was unkind to Snake River as the team from Teton batted around for 8 runs, sending the Lady Panthers to their first defeat on the young season.
"Kara hit the ball well and I thought that Raegan and Erica both pitched pretty well but we just didn't want it tonight and it showed," Coach Martin said.
Snake River (3-1) will look to shake off Tuesday's disappointment when they host South Fremont on Thursday for a 4 o'clock game.
