Eva Wray, 101
Our mother, Eva Lair Wray, quietly slipped away in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Dec. 10, 2013 at the age of 101.
She was born Eva May Lair in the town of Lompoc, Calif. on Sept. 17, 1912. She was the second oldest child of Edgar and Mabel Hodges Lair. Eva was raised with five siblings; two sisters, Edna Barr and Lena “Babe” Short and three brothers, Clarence, Walter and Don.
Mother was a precious child who enjoyed all forms of activities, particularly dancing. She graduated from Lompoc High School in 1929.
She married Owen “Benny” Benedict in 1932 and gave birth to a daughter, JoAnn, in 1934. The couple divorced in 1939 and she relocated to the Los Angeles area in 1942, where she worked several types of jobs, including Max Factor Cosmetics.
She married Ollie Benson Wray on Dec. 22, 1945 and in 1948 they moved to Riverside, Idaho, where they purchased a small 40-acre farm. They went into partnership with Ollie’s brother-in-law and sister, Glenn and Revella Forman, operating the Thomas Merc.
In 1951 Eva gave birth to a son, John. By 1952 the couple chose to relocate to Los Angeles to accommodate Ollie’s ability to support the family as a carpenter. They eventually purchased a home in Lynwood where they remained until Ollie’s retirement in 1968, at which time they returned to their farm in Riverside, Idaho.
Ollie and Eva solemnized their marriage in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in May of 1986. Ollie passed away later that same year, but Eva remained in the home until August of this year, when she moved to an assisted living program in Las Vegas, Nev.
She was staunch member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with a testimony who preferred to work in the background, rather than in the forefront.
She is survived by her younger sister, Babe; her daughter, JoAnn Benedict Hunt; her son, John Terry Wray; and is the progenitor of 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home and for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at the Moreland Cemetery.
