BLACKFOOT — A former Blackfoot man has created a group on Facebook that has more than 1,100 Blackfoot natives reminiscing about their past.
John Brann, who graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1990 and currently lives in Portland, Ore., created the Facebook group "You grew up in Blackfoot, Idaho if you remember… " at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Within 24 hours the group had more than 1,000 members and 1,600 posts.
Brann created the group with the idea that he and a few of his friends would share their memories of growing up in Blackfoot.
"I have a lot of friends there that I went to school with," Brann said. "I thought it might be a good idea."
He had no idea it would catch on so quickly and reach so many people. Several generations of people who live or have lived in Blackfoot have shared their stories of their hometown, posting memories of their favorite hangouts, restaurants, teachers and local fixtures.
"Almost everyone has some really great post," Brann said.
Several members posted about the old swimming pool and ice rink where the Bingham County Courthouse now sits and the ping pong ball drop at Riverside Plaza during Pride Days.
Numerous posts mentioned Shakey's Pizza, the Mini Barn, Blocks, the Bon Ton, Aunt Fanny's, Humpty's Dump, White Glove, Kings and Thrifway. One member put up a picture of McDonald's being built.
One person wrote "I can not believe how many hours I have been on here reading all this....I am equally amazed at how many shared experiences so many of us who have never even met have had. Pretty cool!"
Brann said those who grew up in Blackfoot have a connection to the town, and even though he lives in Oregon now, he said there's no denying that he is from Blackfoot and it remains a huge part of who he is.
Those added to the group are encouraged to click on the "Edit Settings" button at the top of the page to edit their email notification settings since the group is so popular.
