Fire fighters pay off reading challenge

The second annual Fireman's Reading Challenge caught fire this year with almost all of Blackfoot School District participating along with several from Snake River School District. The total of reading minutes tallied up to nearly 5 million. The firefighters started the contest last year in an effort to engage local students in reading.
Winning this years contest was Ridgecrest Elementary with a total of 1,563,671 minutes read by 430 students. This was 500,000 minutes more than the next closest school.
Mrs. Tami Jones' fourth grade readers took the award of $200 for classroom supplies and a pizza party hosted by the firefighters with their total of 225,862 minutes read by 29 students. The competition has ignited a passion for reading amongst the students that will not easily be extinguished.
