Luke Madsen puts the squeeze on his North Fremont foe at Firth on Thursday evening.
FIRTH — In a massive 2A Nuclear Conference match up the Firth Cougars out dueled perennial powerhouse North Fremont 39-21 on the home mats Thursday evening.
"Psychologically it's a big win for us when you consider North Fremont's tradition and all of their state championships," Firth head coach Keith Drake said. "I'm proud of the kids, they wrestled well. We're far from perfect but if our younger kids continue to improve we might be able to take that next step."
Firth opened the night with a big pin by Luke Madsen which was followed by a Nick Anderson 6-0 decision at 220 for the 9-0 lead.
Back came North Fremont with four straight wins to take an 18-9 lead on the Cougars. Firth rebounded with a pair of decisions with Layton Wasia earning a hard fought 2-0 win at 132 and Jackson Thompson battling to an 8-6 win at 138.
After a North Fremont decision at 145 and a Firth win via forfeit at 152 the match stood deadlocked at 21-21.
With three matches remaining Firth then trotted out Conner Montgomery at 160 and Montgomery continued his season long dominance with a first period pin for the 27-21 Cougar lead. Less than two minutes later it was Matt Lindberg who thrilled the crowd with his first period pin to seal the duel. Kaden Miles then put the icing on the cake when he pinned his Husky opponent fifty seconds into the third period.
"Our strength all year long has been those guys in the upper weights and they came through again for us tonight," Coach Drake said. "They are all just great leaders and great examples for the rest of the team."
Firth will return to the mats new Thursday when they host West Jefferson for another conference duel with the Panthers beginning at 6 p.m.
