Firth rock solid in sweep of Bonneville JV

May 4, 2011

Glenn Monson dives back to the bag ahead of the pick off attempt during game one at Firth High School on Wednesday afternoon.

FIRTH — The Firth baseball squad continues to roll along as they swept a pair of ball games from the Bonneville Junior Varsity squad by identical 10-0 scores.
The name of the game for Firth was strong defense and stellar pitching evident by a pair of complete game gems that were thrown by Conner Montgomery and Brenner Coughlan who pitched ahead of a defense that committed just one error between the two ball games.
"Our pitching and defense has been with us all year and now we just need to keep hitting the cage and keep working on our hitting because we're getting there," Firth head coach Scott Adams said.
Montgomery got the win in the opening game as he scattered three hits over his six innings of work. Granted the defense didn't get too many opportunities in the field behind Montgomery as he sat down 12 would be base runners via the strike out.
Offensively the Cougars struck pay dirt in five of the six innings played, the big inning a 5 run sixth inning that sealed the 10 run ruled conclusion.
"This was probably the nicest day, or second nicest day weather wise that we've played in so we really don't know what kind of team we are when we play in good weather," coach Adams said.
Kory Anderson was huge for the Cougars at the plate, reaching base in each of his four plate appearances with a pair of doubles to his credit.
Heber Bodily was also rather effective at the dish as he finished game one 3 for 4 with a double. Kris Lockyer ended the game with an RBI double for the Cougars.
In game two, Coughlan got the nod on the bump and he turned in an equally as impressive performance by allowing just 2 hits over his five innings of work while striking out 7 in the shut out.
Logan Wynn led the charge at the plate for the Cougars, finishing 3 for 4 while Ben Cornia pitched in a 2 for 2 day with a double and the game clinching RBI single in the home half of the fifth inning.
"We are coming along, we have a good record right now and we had Malad beat about a week ago until we kind of gave that one up and the end," coach Adams said. "We continue to get more confidence as we go and hopefully we will have another good two weeks of baseball."
With the win Firth improves their record to a most impressive 16-2 and will close out the regular season on Friday when they travel to Shelley for a double header with the Russets.
