Good Wok is a family tradition

BLACKFOOT – The Good Wok is a 35-year fair tradition and a Hong family affair. The family booth now has third generation members serving up the fair famous rice bowls.
"The fair has been very good to our family and we would like to give something back to our customers and the next generation of local kids," said Mindy Hong.
The Good Wok plans to give back several ways this year beginning the first day of the fair with a customer appreciation bargain of two bowls for $10.
Hong says they keep it simple. There are three things to choose from at their booth, teriyaki chicken with ham fried rice, hot and spicy chicken with ham fried rice or ham fried rice.
On Tuesday, the Good Wok will donate 20 percent of its sales to Brooklyn's Playground.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to raise money for the playground," said Mindy. "I have a daughter the same age as Brooklyn who we've taken to many of the playground's fundraising events. She is so excited to now have her own fundraising event."
The Good Wok will also provide space next to its booth on Tuesday where volunteers will set up a display and sell fundraising items such as T-shirts, or personalized pickets and pavers to benefit Brooklyn's Playground.
Tim and Kerry Hong co-own the booth with siblings Mindy and Matt. They return to Blackfoot every fair time.
"As the older brother, I love coming back to the fair to spend time with family," said Tim. "Our dad (Jerry) calls it the family reunion, however, you don't go to family reunions and work 120 hours in one week and risk getting fired by your little sister."
Fairgoers can expect extra perks from the Good Wok this year thanks to social media. The Hongs say there will be giveaways and free food.
"I travel a lot for my job, working with big companies like Facebook and Twitter. There is no better conversation starter than talking about how I spend my vacation working at the fair," said Tim. "We are excited to use new technology like Facebook, Twitter, and Square (to accept credit cards at our booth), while still serving the same food that has been part of the fair for 35 years."
For the Hong family fair time brings the family back together in the community that is home.
"Working at the fair every year reminds me of why growing up in Idaho was so great. I enjoy seeing familiar old faces and also watching a new generation of young people have fun at the fair," said Kerry. "I am proud that my son is able to work alongside of me while we serve good food to great people."
Mindy says one of her earliest memories is coming to the fair with her mom.
"Mom would come to roll egg rolls (at the booth next to Good Wok) and she would put stickers on our shirts that said 'if lost return to the egg roll booth.'"
