Hayes, Peterson lead Blackfoot to 20-14 win over Hillcrest in opener

August 30, 2014

Blackfoot’s Matt Peterson skies for the first of his two touchdowns catches while Hillcrest’s Bridger Blakeslee defends Friday night at Blackfoot High School.

BLACKFOOT — With the game tied 14-14 a little more than a minute left in the game Blackfoot sophomore quarterback Pacen Hayes had 85 yards standing between himself and a potential game-winning touchdown.
Hayes calmly marched the Broncos down the field completing three passes the last being a 26-yard touchdown pass to Matt Peterson to give the Broncos a 20-14 win over Hillcrest to kick-off the 2014 season.
The final drive led by Hayes was helped out by a pair of Knights penalties and some solid blocking by the Broncos offensive line.
Hayes found a streaking Peterson with 35.4 seconds left in the in the left side of the end zone to send the Blackfoot faithful into a frenzy.
"Pacen put it where he wanted it and I went up and caught it," Peterson said. "When you have a quarterback that can throw like he can it makes it easy to make plays."
"It will be fun to have Pacen around for the next few years," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "He throws a good ball and is surrounded by kids that can make plays."
Blackfoot led 14-0 at halftime as Hayes connected with Peterson on a 11 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and Andrew Hatch from 16 yards in the second quarter.
If there was a something in the game that the Broncos will have to fix going forward it will be the handling of the snap. Hayes fumbled three snaps and lost all three, the last of which ended up giving the Knights their first touchdown of the game.
Hillcrest Beau Crouch scrambled in from 11 yard out to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Morgan Pyper tied the game with his 28 yard run later in the quarter.
But the Broncos rallied and moved down the field to earn the win.
"We knew they going to try and defend the deep ball," Buck said. "So we took our time and moved the ball down the field and got the big play."
Hayes finished the game 15-of-21 for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Peterson had eight catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
