BLACKFOOT — Entering Wednesday evenings game with the 5A Highland Rams the Blackfoot Lady Broncos knew that they had a tough contest on their hands. For a better portion of the evening, that tough contest was nearly impossible to handle as Highland came out firing, downing Blackfoot on their home court 64-33.
"There were times tonight when we did some nice things but this season really will be put together in layers," Blackfoot head coach Mike Kirkham said. "Tonight was just page two and we have twenty more too go so we will continue to put together this team piece by piece, layer by layer and at the end of the year we'll be there."
Turnovers, among other things, proved to be the death nail for the Lady Broncos. Depending upon your perspective, either the lack of ball handling by Blackfoot or stifling defense by Highland led to 30 turnovers, leading to fast break opportunities all evening long for the Lady Rams.
"We had a terrible time bringing the ball up," coach Kirkham said. "It almost looked like we were intimidated at times and at others we looked like we were just tired."
Twenty-one of those turnovers occurred in the first half of play leading to a 34-13 half-time deficit that Blackfoot never threatened.
Once again Cerissa Honena led the Lady Broncos in the scoring column with 19 points as the talented junior canned a pair of treys and was a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line.
Blackfoot (1-1) will return to action on Friday night when they travel to Idaho Falls for a non-conference show down with the 5A Lady Tigers.
