AMMON — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos got 23 points from junior point guard Kylie Coby but in the end, a big Hillcrest second quarter proved too much to overcome as Blackfoot's season came to an end with a 76-60 to the Lady Knights in the Dungeon.
"We just never could recover once we got down by eleven in that second quarter," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "Kylie had a great night and she is the point guard of the future for us but now we just have to get that mental attitude and belief that we can win games like these."
All things being equal, the difference in the ball game was at the free throw line where Blackfoot hit just 50% of their 28 attempts while Hillcrest tickled the twine with 18 of 26 shooting from the line.
"They made their free throws and we didn't," Coach Smith said. "It really is the little things that make a big difference in the game. If we do one or two of those little things just a little better it would have made a big difference."
One thing that the Lady Broncos did do well was their pressure defense as they forced 27 Hillcrest turnovers courtesy of their defensive sets.
"We have a lot of speed and athleticism in our guards," Coach Smith said. "I thought that we did a good job of pressuring them and we will have those quick guards back next year."
Boo Burnett added 14 points and Cerissa Honena pitched in 9 in the losing effort for the Lady Broncos.
"When you look at this team we never quite got fully gelled together because of injuries. A new coach. A new system with no off season to work together," Coach Smith said. "There is no tears in the locker room though. They are angry and ready to work hard this off season and we are developing the right mental attitude. I really think that this was the start of a program because Blackfoot has the talent. We're knocking on the door. We just need to kick the door in."
