Homer L. Nielson, 90

Preston - Devoted and beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother dad and friend, Homer Leon Nielson, 90, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the home of his daughter in Blackfoot.
He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Cleveland, Idaho, the ninth child among 10 born to Edgar Odland and Catherine Ann Bevins Nielson.  His early years were spent on a homestead in the foothills, of the Cleveland mountains on the west side of what was called Gentile Valley.
Cleveland Elementary was two rooms and full of learning, teasing, pranks, and mischief.  Homer was a typical boy and was punished often by being sent to a small library room in the back of the school where the books were kept.  Punishment?  Hardly!  Homer had his nose in a book every chance he got.  He especially loved history and geography books.
Later Homer would see the world with his sweetheart Ane Ora Hansen and their daughter Christie Ann.  They married on the 31st of January, 1946 in Preston.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City, Utah, LDS Temple on the 9th of June, 1952.
Homer honorably served our country as a Chief Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force for over 31 years.  He and his family lived in Saudi Arabia; Texas; California; Belgium; Montana; Mountain Home; Thailand, and Samoa.  He was known as Roamer by his siblings!
He was a part of history flying over the beaches of Normandy as a gunner and bombardier in a B-17 on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
You would never know what an amazing many of leadership and courage Homer was unless he told you in one of his fabulous stories.  He was handsome beyond words and humble and loving, full of wisdom and compassion.
He served in many leadership capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world.  He and Annie served many missions and loved all people.  He especially loved his brothers and sisters and celebrated times they could go fishing and hunting together or just sit down to a meal. He cherished his beautiful grandchildren and treasured his Annie and Christie Ann.
He is survived by Christie Ann Buchin of Blackfoot; four grandchildren and five grea-grandchildren, and one sister Ora Smout Rasmussen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his siblings Delbert Hyrum Nielson, Erma Catherine Austin, Leland Nels Nielson, Della Bodell Higley, Verl Joseph Nielson, Harvey Dee Nielson, Donna Keller Moser, and Merlin Edgar Nielson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at noon at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East in Preston.  A viewing will be held on Saturday from 10-10:30 a.m. at Webb Funeral Home.  Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.
