BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck is fond of saying that special players make special plays. On Friday night, the Blackfoot Broncos got special plays by several special players but none bigger than the 7-catch, 5-touchdown effort from senior Beau Hoskins who led the Broncos to a conference clinching 43-28 victory.
"This was huge, coming off of our loss last week we needed to come back off of that and get back to practicing hard and we did that harder than ever this week," Beau Hoskins said.
Blackfoot set the tone early as Trae Pilster connected with Hoskins on a 44-yard pitch and catch just one and a half minutes into the first quarter and after a Luis Oseguera extra point the Broncos led 7-0.
Hillrest responded with what they do best, playing the shell game in the double wing, moving the ball down the field for a score and a two-point conversion for a 8-7 lead with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter.
Back came Blackfoot, moving the ball down the field with a nice blend of run and pass as sophomore sensation Alonzo Ramos got involved in the offense. The drive was capped with a Pilster to Hoskins 16-yard touchdown strike and after the extra point Blackfoot led 14-8.
"We kind of came into this week with our heads down a bit but we really came out and performed tonight," coach Buck said. "I think that Alonzo was really big for us tonight which gives us another avenue offensively and Trae did a great job throwing the ball."
The two teams combined for three more touchdowns in the second quarter as defense was optional in a half that witnessed no punts from either team.
Hillcrest scored twice in the quarter, offsetting a third touchdown catch by Hoskins and heading into the half, Hillcrest led 22-21.
Out of the break Blackfoot got defensive as a few minor tweaks at the half paid off in big dividends on the field of play in the second half.
"Great effort, great effort our kids really stepped it up and the second half defensively I was so proud of our kids," coach Buck said. "We told them at half to just settle down, don't over flow and make sure that we focus on our angles better and the kids did what we asked them to do."
Blackfoot opened the half by forcing the Knights to punt on their first possession. On the very next play Blackfoot hit the jack pot once again as Pilster lofted a pretty ball down the Bronco sideline into the waiting hands of Hoskins who out raced the Hillcrest defense to the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown. Hoskins then added a two-point reception putting the Broncos up for good at 29-22.
"We saw on film that they liked to play tight with their corners so we knew that we would take advantage of that either me or Colby," Hoskins said. "We just need to keep practicing hard like we did this week and keep our moral up."
Hillcrest did pull within one point at 29-28 later in the third quarter but that was the last viable threat that they had in them as Blackfoot's defense turned up the heat.
Blackfoot put the game away with a touchdown pass from Ramos to Hoskins late in the third quarter and then a powerful run by Garrett Buck from 1-yard out for the games final score early in the fourth quarter.
In the win Pilster lit up the stat column finishing the night with 264-yards passing, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Pilster also rushed the ball 10 times for 85 yards.
Ramos showed his slash type skills, throwing a touchdown, rushing the ball 15 times for 86-yards and catching the ball 4 times for 43-yards.
With the win Blackfoot secures the High Country Conference title courtesy of a won coin toss with Shelley earlier in the day and will host Jerome next Friday night at Blackfoot High School in the first round of the state playoffs.
"We just want to be here, that is everyones goal, we're happy and with a little luck of the draw we go in number one but we I think that we earned it, we earned it tonight." coach Buck said.
