POCATELLO — Easton Ralphs hit the go ahead basket with 0:08 remaining in overtime and Blackfoot's last second shot attempt was blocked as time expired as the Pocatello Indians held off a game effort from the Blackfoot Broncos with a 61-60 overtime win at Pocatello High School on Wednesday evening.
"We had our opportunities to win this game," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "This was a learning game. If we get in this situation again we will know better what to do that's for sure."
The game itself was as close as it could get on the court as the two teams traded the lead 15 times during the evening and neither team led by more than six points on the scoreboard.
Offensively, the Broncos and the Indians were as cold as the frigid temperatures just outside of the gym doors during first half action as neither team were able to convert on good looks leading to a 21-19 Pocatello lead at the half.
Out of the break, the action on the court heated up as Blackfoot got three point baskets from Alonzo Ramos, McKye Watt, Colby Pearson and Tyler Cannon to take a 38-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
Pocatello answered the bell to start the fourth quarter as they opened the frame with a 9-2 run for a six point lead, the largest of the evening.
Austin Campbell was having none of that nonsense however as the big guy powered home six straight points to tie the game a 46-46 and an Alonzo Ramos three point shot with 1:40 remaining in the game gave the Broncos a 53-52 lead.
"We were down 6 and we were able to climb the mountain which was tough," Coach Hale said.
After a Pocatello free throw to tie the game Blackfoot then held the ball looking to end the game in regulation with a last shot. Ramos was able to penetrate the right side of the Indian defense where he lifted and shot a ball that was on line, but just short as it caromed off the front iron sending the game to overtime.
"We had it designed for Zo to penetrate and shoot if he had the look and he did," Coach Hale said.
In the overtime Blackfoot shot out of the gates as Colby Pearson scored the first five points of the bonus frame leading to a 7-2 Blackfoot run for the 60-55 lead.
Unfortunately a couple of ill timed turnovers kept the Indians in the ball game, eventually leading to the game winner by Easton.
"We had them in our back pocket," Coach Hale said. "We have the lead and then we have three critical turnovers. You have to hand it to Easton though, he hit a big shot when they needed it."
Blackfoot (2-5, 0-2) will travel to Snake River on Friday looking for a season sweep of their cross river rivals. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
