Indians topple cold shooting Broncos
Tyler Cannon defends his Preston opponent during second half action at Blackfoot Wednesday evening.
BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Broncos are looking like a M.A.S.H. unit as they had a pair of starters leave the game with injuries with Colby Pearson taking a blow to the nose and Alonzo Ramos rolling an ankle. That said, the Broncos had a shot to win their conference match up with Preston but in the end, the visiting Indians made a more plays down the stretch as they stole a road win over Blackfoot by the final score of 54-49.
"Preston are young but they're a good team and if you let them hang around like we did, they start to get their confidence and they start to believe that they can win which is what they did," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "I don't think that we played a very smart basketball game tonight. We got up by six or eight points and then we take a couple of bad shots, turned the ball over and let them back into the game."
Indeed it looked as if the Broncos were going to put the game in their back pocket early on as they closed the first quarter on a 13-1 run to erase a slow start to the game and then pushed their lead to nine at 25-16 midway through the second quarter.
Preston responded with an 11-1 run of their own to take a halftime lead on the Broncos but Blackfoot were not done yet as they pounded the ball inside to Austin Campbell in the third quarter where the big fella scored six of his ten points on the evening to help push the Broncos back out in front at 42-38 after three quarters of play.
"We had that high pick and roll working there in the third quarter and once we got up on them again I thought that we were going to take off," Coach Hale said.
The irons then turned as cold for the Broncos however and Preston took advantage of the scoring lull for a 10-0 run over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.
That proved to be more than enough as the Broncos were unable to get the offensive mojo rolling as they fell to 0-4 in conference play.
"In our conference you don't have a lot of time to hang your heads after a loss," Coach Hale said. "We have one day to shake this one off and then we are back at it."
Blackfoot will be home when they take the court on Friday as Pocatello comes to call for another conference tilt beginning at 7:30 p.m.
