Lady Bears force second title game with Lady Panthers
Ashlynn Wood puts the tag down on the Bear Lake runner at third base to complete a double play during first inning action at Marsh Valley High School on Monday.
ARIMO — The Snake River Lady Panthers had their opportunity to close out the 3A fifth district tournament on Monday afternoon but standing in their way was a very hot Bear Lake team that was riding the wave of momentum from their upset victory over the top seeded Marsh Valley squad in the game just previous.
That wave of momentum came crashing down on the Lady Panthers as the Lady Bears pounded out 15 hits in a 10-4 win over Snake River to force a second championship game today.
"Bear Lake were just on a roll today," Snake River head coach Kay Martin said. "They came out and just hit the ball and unfortunately, we didn't."
Bear Lakes lead off hitter did the bulk of the damage on the afternoon as she finished the day 4 for 4 with 4 stolen bases and 3 runs scored.
Despite that, Snake River had their opportunity to stick the title in their back pocket as they battled back from a 4-1 deficit with a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Erica Ramirez ignited the fifth inning rally with a solid single, scoring courtesy of a Katie Ogden RBI single two batters later. Ogden scored on the next play when Chelsey Martin ripped a single and after throwing error from the Bear Lake second baseman, Ogden had scored and Martin had made her way all the way to third base.
That was where the offense stalled however as an Ashlynn Wood double in the sixth inning was the last base runner that the Lady Panthers could muster on the day.
"We're disappointed with the loss but you have to hand it to Bear Lake, when you hit the ball as well as they did today it's tough to beat," Coach Martin said. "You really can't expect to win a game when you give up ten runs but luckily we have one more game to try and win it. We will have to hit the ball and if we do that, we'll get momentum back with us."
Snake River and Bear Lake will face off for the district title today with first pitch scheduled for 4 P.M. Once again, the game will be played at Marsh Valley High School.
