Lady Broncos pick up two against Lady Russets
The Blackfoot Broncos took two at Shelley on Tuesday.
SHELLEY — Bingham County foes collided on Tuesday afternoon as the Shelley Russets welcomed the Blackfoot Broncos to town for a High Country Conference double header on the softball diamond.
At the end of a warm and balmy day, the Broncos emerged victorious as they swept the double dip 6-4 and 15-2.
"The girls just need to believe in themselves," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "We may be the best practice team that I have ever seen but once the game starts we play a little nervous. You could see in the second game the confidence coming with the girls. They are coming to life and I'm pumped about that."
Makayla Rowsell sqaured off against Jessalyn Hobbs in the first game with both pitchers throwing complete games in the circle for their respective teams.
Roswell got the better of the show down however as she struck out 10 Russets while scattering 5 hits over her seven innings of work.
"Makayla was fantastic today," Coach Chavez said. "You could tell that she did some work over the spring break and it showed."
Shelley's Madi Ball did rough Rowsell up on a pitch in the fourth inning when she sent a rocket over the left field fence for a solo home run but Rowsell settle down, struck out the next batter and then the side in the fifth.
Offensively, the Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Brielle Brower and Jessica Capson earned back-to-back walks to open the game. Mattison Chavez then cashed in those ducks on the pond with a 2RBI double, her first of two doubles in the game. Capson scored again in the second inning courtesy of an RBI single by Chavez for a 3-0 lead before the solo shot by Ball made the score 3-1 Broncos.
Blackfoot added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth as they held off a late inning rally by the Russets who scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game at 6-4.
"I thought that we played well in the first game," Shelley head coach Chris Fleming said. "Blackfoot's pitcher did a great job of throwing strikes and you have to hand it to them, when they are ripping the ball like they did, especially in that second game, there isn't a whole lot you can do about it."
In the night cap the game was over early as Blackfoot took advantage of a pair of huge innings to blow the game wide open.
In the second inning they erupted for 4 runs, each of which came with two outs in the inning. Walks were a key factor in the inning as the Russets surrendered 4 in the inning.
Blackfoot then followed that inning up with an 8 run uprising in the top of the third inning. Blackfoot picked up four hits in the frame with Tylie Polatis, and Ally Smith each driving in runs with big base knocks.
"When we start thinking too much we make the game a lot harder than we need to," Coach Chavez said. "We got it rolling in the second game and it's something that I think that we will be able to keep going as we now start playing a more regular schedule which should get us into a rhythm."
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday with Blackfoot (5-1, 4-0) hosting Pocatello for a double header and Shelley (4-6, 0-2) hosting Bonneville for a conference double dip with the Bees.
Both are scheduled to begin at 4 P.M.
