Lady Broncos punch ticket to state tournament
AMMON — "We're going to state!" That was the refrain following Blackfoots 7-5 victory over Bonneville on Wednesday afternoon as the Blackfoot Lady Broncos punched their ticket to the big dance after a one year absence.
"These girls are just pumped to go show off their skills at state," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "We really want a chance to redeem ourselves if we get a chance to play Rigby again."
The two teams entered Wednesday's contest riding very different waves of momentum with Blackfoot coming in following a disappointing loss in the district title game the day previous and Bonneville entering the contest after scoring a whopping 23 runs in their loser out contest against Hillcrest.
In the top of the first inning it looked as if that trend was going to continue as the Bees took a 2-0 lead courtesy of an opposite field two run homer.
Blackfoot answered right back in the bottom of the inning however as Brielle Brower worked a walk, stole second base and then came sprinting home when Mattison Chavez ripped a double off the left field fence. Jamie Horsley plated Chavez one batter later with a sacrifice fly to even the score at 2-2.
"I told the girls to come out and just play with confidence today and believe in themselves the way that I believe in them," Coach Chavez said. "I knew coming up on the bus and the way that we warmed up that we were going to be a focused team today."
Bonneville added one more run in the top of the third inning with a lead off home run to left but that lead was short lived as Blackfoot answered back with a three run home half for a lead that they never surrendered.
Mattison got the offense going with a ringing double in the gap and one pitch later, Miraya Castaneda continued her hot streak at the plate as she traded places with Chavez with a double of her own. Makayla Rowsell, Tylie Polatis and Ally Smith followed with singles in the frame as they staked starting pitcher, Jessica Capson to the lead.
Capson knew what to do with that lead from there on out as the fire balling right hander shut down the Bonneville offense for the next three innings before Bonneville were able to scratch out 2 runs in the top of the seventh to make it interesting.
Capson slammed the door on the comeback attempt however as she struck out the final batter of the game for the win.
"Bonneville is a great team, they really are," Coach Chavez said. "To be honest. Before the season started I thought that we would be playing Bonneville in the championship game. They never quit until the final out and so it made me a little nervous there at the end."
With the win Blackfoot will now head to Twin Falls for the state tournament which begins next Friday against an opponent yet to be determined.
