Lady Broncos send seniors out with sweep of Lady Bobcats
BLACKFOOT — Nine seniors took to the home softball diamond at Blackfoot High School on Tuesday evening for the final time in their prep careers. At the end of the evening, Blackfoot sent Brielle Brower, Tylie Polatis, Makayla Rowsell, Jamie Horsely, Ally Smith, Tesia Trube, Miraya Castaneda, Jarissa Jensen and Bailey Miller out winners as they swept both ends of the conference double dip with Madison 6-4 in game one and 13-4 in the nightcap.
"It was definitely nice to send these seniors out with wins," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "They came out, stood up to the challenge and each and everyone of them contributed on a night that they weren't going to allow anyone to get a win on them."
Blackfoot led throughout in the opening game as Makayla Rowsell was stellar in the circle, working 6 innings in the victory by scattering 7 hits and striking out 6 Bobcats.
Jessica Capson entered in relief of Rowsell, slamming the door with a perfect seventh inning for the save.
"Our pitching was outstanding," Coach Chavez said. "Makayla threw a heck of a ball game and when Madison were trying to mount a late comeback Jessica came in and did a great job of closing it out."
The Blackfoot defense was flawless in support of the pitching and offensively, the Lady Broncos got more than enough runs with runs in the second, third and then a 4 run fourth inning which put the game out of reach.
In the fourth, Brielle Brower scored Miraya Castaneda all the way from first base with an RBI triple down the left field line. Brower then scored a batter later when sophomore Mattison Chavez hit an opposite field 2 run dinger in her first left handed swing on the season.
"She's our Chipper Jones," Coach Chavez said. "We noticed in practice that she was hitting the ball hard from the left side of the plate so we turned her around and let her swing left handed."
Chavez eventually duplicated the home run with a second blast, this time over the right field fence in the home half of the third inning during game two, tying the score at the time at 3-3.
Madison battled back for a lone run in the top of the fourth but that was all the scoring that the Bobcats could muster for the remainder of the game as Capson found the rhythm in the circle by shutting out the Madison offense for the remainder of the game.
Meanwhile, the Blackfoot offense was just starting to heat up as they batted around in both the fifth and sixth innings, scoring five runs in each of the frames to take command of the contest.
Brower, Chavez, Polatis and Trube each scored twice for the Lady Broncos as they took advantage of 5 wild pitches by the Madison pitcher.
"It's just fantastic to pick up both wins today," Coach Chavez said. "Madison beat Hillcrest who beat us last week so I think a sweep today is big for these girls confidence as we head into districts in a couple of weeks. The girls are progressing, their improving and I think that we are going to be peaking at just the right time."
Blackfoot (9-5, 6-2) will travel to Rigby on Thursday where they will close out the conference portion of their season with a double header with the Lady Trojans beginning at 4 P.M.
