Lady Broncos win rivalry game
BLACKFOOT — With a one-point lead and 14.3 seconds left on the clock and the ball out on the sidelines the Blackfoot Lady Broncos were expecting a foul to come from one of the Snake River Panthers.
But unfortunately for Lady Panthers fans the foul never came and Blackfoot won a hard fought rivalry game 44-43 at Blackfoot High School Tuesday night.
"Tonight stings," Snake River head coach Rich Dunn said. "You never want to lose to your city rival, but Blackfoot out hustled us and deserved to win."
"We knew tonight was going to be a tough game," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "We only had six players tonight so we needed everyone to step up. We knew that Snake could not handle the press, but we could not put it on until the final quarter."
The Blackfoot full-court press defense gave Snake River fits during the final eight minutes and was a big reason for the Broncos rally in the fourth quarter.
"I bet if when we go back and look at the film we turned the ball over at least five times in transition in the fourth quarter," Dunn said. "We have a lot of young kid sour there and tonight we made those youthful mistakes."
One of those youthful mistakes came in the final 30 seconds of the game when freshman Jetta Goff was called for traveling after the Panthers were able to break the Broncos press.
The Panthers led by four entering the fourth quarter but a 12-3 run started by Morning Rose Tobey and capped off by a three-pointer from Cassandra Clarke gave the Broncos a 40-29 lead.
But dispute the best efforts of Ivy Goff and Brylie Bair, the Broncos made just enough free throws down the stretch to win the game.
"Our game plan early on was to double team Tobey," Dunn said. "And early on we did a pretty good job of that, but in the second half she found her way open and did what she needed to do."
Tobey finished with a game-high 22 points.
