Lady Cougars dominate Lady Panthers

April 14, 2011

Firth second baseman Tristan Hillman makes the final out of the fourth inning at Firth High School on Thursday afternoon.

FIRTH — Kelsey Oliver carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and the Lady Cougar bats erupted for 10 runs on 9 hits as Firth remained undefeated in conference play with a 10-0 victory over long time rival West Jefferson on Thursday afternoon.
"I'm just real proud of the girls today," Firth head coach Rachel Olsen said. "We have put in a lot of time in the snow and the rain just waiting for it to click and I am just happy that it clicked today."
After a quick 1-2-3 inning to begin the game, Firth came to the plate in the home half of the first looking to gain an early advantage. The Lady Cougars did just that, tallying 3 runs in the opening frame as they jumped on the Panthers starter right from the opening pitch.
Shelby Williams opened the game with a walk and then was sacrifice over to second base by Brooke Chapman. Kelsey Oliver then helped her own cause with an RBI single and later score when Tristan Hillman ripped a 2RBI single for the 3-0 advantage.
As it was, that was all the run support that Oliver needed on Thursday as she cruised through the Panther lineup like a fat guy at a Las Vegas buffet.
"Kelsey threw awesome," coach Olsen said. "She wasn't supposed to be here but we were sure glad that she showed up. She threw awesome, she hit her corners and her change up was awesome today. Even the balls that they did hit, were not hit hard and the defense had no troubles behind her today."
The hits kept coming for Firth however as they scored in five of the six innings played. A RBI bunt single by Hillman capped the ten run ruled game when Shannon Spencer scampered home in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"We got hits one through nine but hitting hasn't been our problem, it has been more of our mental toughness that has been lacking but the girls just did awesome today," coach Olsen said. "I could not be more proud of these girls, it was an awesome game."
Firth (2-4, 2-0) will be in action at the Skyline tournament which begins today at 1 P.M for the Lady Cougars. They will then play at 4 this afternoon.
