Lady Grizzlies nip Lady Broncos
Cerissa Honena works the ball during Blackfoot home loss to Skyline on Friday night.
BLACKFOOT — It was a home game for the Blackfoot Lady Bronco basketball team but it felt as if they were on the road from a statistical perspective as the visiting Skyline squad shot 28 free throws, compared to 4 for Blackfoot, in a 39-34 defeat at the hands of the Lady Grizzlies.
"Well, it was a much closer game," Blackfoot head coach Mike Kirkham said. "Bottom line is that the kids want to win and they are really trying. I haven't seen any of them giving up and as long as they'll continue with that attitude, things will have to get better."
Despite the lopsided free throw advantage, the Lady Broncos were able to remain in the game largely in part to 7 treys in the game, five of those from the games leading scorer Cerissa Honena who finished the night with 19-points.
"We still aren't used to playing with each other, our ball movement is still too slow and we need to move the ball quicker and trust our instincts." coach Kirkham said.
On the scoreboard the game was as tight as a sports writers sweatpants after a Thanksgiving dinner as neither team led by more than 6-points on the night.
Blackfoot trailed by 2-points after the first quarter and at the half but came out firing to begin the second half of play with Honena dialing long distance on the opening offensive possession and then Delese Marshall tickled the twine from deep to put the Lady Broncos up 22-18.
That was all the third quarter scoring for Blackfoot however as Skyline battled back to take yet another 2-point advantage at the end of the stanza 24-22.
Blackfoot had their chances down the stretch but Skyline was able to hold the ladies in green at arms length from the charity stripe, sending Blackfoot to their fifth straight loss.
"We'll take the positives from tonight and take them into practice with us where we will continue to work on the fundamentals and try to smooth out the offense." coach Kirkham concluded.
Blackfoot (1-5, 0-1) will host Madison next Wendesday at 7:30 P.M.
