SHELLEY - In a contest that was as exciting as it was entertaining, the Shelley Lady Russets toppled the Skyline Lady Grizzlies 69-65 in overtime.
Sadee Wattenbarger nailed a banked in three pointer with 13.7 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 57 and tipped a pass away on defense to send the game into the extra stanza.
"Sadee played huge tonight," said Coach Burke Davis. "She is our tallest post player and is always out sized, but never out hustled or out played. She gives us her best every night."
Both teams hit the floor running with Skyline forcing the ball inside to take advantage of their size advantage and with Caryn Wendt and Alicia Jones alternating inside domination, opened up a 17-12 lead by quarter's end, with Jones scoring ten points, all on the inside.
"We knew that they were going to go to the inside game," said Coach Davis. "We are always at a disadvantage size wise, but our girls have heart and we just keep working on boxing out and trying to maximize our opportunities."
Shelley battled back in the second period, wearing down the Grizzlies with defensive pressure and fast break opportunities and by the intermission, had tied the game at 24.
"Coach kept telling us to box out and take good shots," said sophomore Kimber Call. "It is great to play with these girls and we really moved the ball well tonight."
The third quarter saw the Lady Grizzlies continually pound the ball inside and Wendt and Jones responded by scoring 20 of the team's 22 points in the period.
"Our shooting ability and free throws kept us in the game," said Coach Davis. "We were able to weather their big quarter and then used our hustle and bench to stay in the game."
The Lady Russets rallied in the fourth behind the shooting of Call, Mandy Kelley and Wattenbarger to force the tie and then scored the first five points of the overtime to seize control of the game.
"We hit our free throws and that was huge for us tonight," said Sadee Wattenbarger. "When we shoot well, we can play with anybody."
Shelley hit on 14 of 19 charity tosses and nailed 7 of 16 three pointers on the night, offsetting the 43 points that Skyline scored in the paint.
