Lady Russets pick up first win

September 2, 2011

Amira Jones gets a shot past Aubi Crabtree during second half action at Shelley High School on Thursday.

SHELLEY — With the game tied at 1-1, late in the second half of Shelley and Blackfoot's conference tilt on the Lady Russets home field, Shelley's Megan Jensen pulled out her sand wedge and then lofted a perfect shot over the Blackfoot goal keeper for the eventual game winner.
"I was taking the ball up the side and the wind was on our side because when I kicked it I thought that it might cross over the goal and the goal keeper thought so to because she kind of gave up on it and then it just floated down into the net," Jensen said of the game winning play. "The whole game was just great. We warmed up with a lot of energy and our chemistry on the field was great."
It was the first win in over a year for the Lady Russets and they had to come from behind to do it as the Lady Broncos got a first half goal from Cassandra Clarke in the twenty-second minute for the 1-0 lead.
Playing with the wind, Blackfoot had several chances at scoring but balls off the post and strong keeper play by Nikki Nelson thwarted the opportunities.
"We just didn't finish, we just couldn't put the ball away," Blackfoot head coach Scott Stufflebeam said. "The kids were hustling I can't find fault there and we had our opportunities, we just didn't cash them in. We got our goal going into the wind so I thought that we were in good shape in the second half, we just didn't put it away."
Shelley tied the score with a goal by senior Amira Jones in the forty-eighth minute of play.
"We had all of us up there by the goal and after a cross the ball kind of ping-ponged around and when it came to me I thought I'm gonna score," Jones said. "We had it going and I could just feel it."
With the win, Shelley now has their first win as a member of the 4A High Country Conference.
"This just feels really good," Shelley keeper Nikki Nelson said. "We are all just so excited and a win like this will only make us want to come out and win more. Our energy was high and we did it."
Both teams will be off over the weekend with Blackfoot (2-3, 1-2) returning to the pitch on Tuesday for a home date with Hillcrest while Shelley (1-4, 1-2) will be in action next Thursday when they travel to Madison. Both games will begin at 4:30.
