SHELLEY — The Shelley Lady Russets turned in their best performance of the year on Wednesday evening, overpowering the Lady Bees of Bonneville 56-43 in a High Country Conference tilt at Shelley High School.
"Like I told the girls, this was the best team basketball that we have played this year," Shelley head coach Burke Davis said. "We distributed the basketball with extra passes and I thought that we were really patient, we didn't shoot as many ill advised shots as we have so far this year."
Shelley came out firing as Mady Kelley opened the night with back-to-back baskets for a lead that the Lady Russets never relinquished.
A two-point advantage ballooned to 13 by the end of the half as Shelley dialed long distance with Kimber Call, Adi Young and Kelley each tickling the twine from distance as they sprinted to the locker room with a 31-18 lead.
"We hadn't seen much of Bonneville so we didn't really know what we were going to get but as the game opened up they didn't seem to adjust to what was working for us and the girls were knocking down shots with confidence so we just stuck with what was working," coach Davis said. "Don't fix what's not broken."
In the second half of play Shelley turned to their center, Sadee Wattenbarger and the lanky senior paid big dividends for the Lady Russets as she poured in all of her team leading 14-points in the second half, while pulling down 7 of her 8 rebounds on the night.
"Without question this was the most complete game that we've had," coach Davis said.
Bonneville tried to make it interesting late in the fourth quarter as Erica Shenten reeled off 6-straight points to pull the Lady Bees to within 10 at 49-39 but that was as close as they could get as Shelley slammed the door on the comeback attempt with a quick 7-0 run.
Shelley (3-2, 1-0) will return to action on Friday when they travel to pre-season conference favorite Rigby for a massive contest beginning at 7:30 P.M.
