Lady Tigers pull away from Lady Broncos

Brielle Brower looks for an opening during second half action against Idaho Falls on Wednesday evening.

IDAHO FALLS — Early foul trouble spelled trouble for the Blackfoot Lady Broncos as they fell to 5A Idaho Falls 51-33 on Wednesday evening.
"We have both of our guards pick up those three early fouls and it really changed what we wanted to do," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "It did give us a chance to get other girls on our bench into the game which gave them all some valuable experience."
Blackfoot and Idaho Falls traded baskets throughout the first quarter with Kylie Coby and Boo Burnett scoring 4 points each in the opening stanza as the Lady Broncos took a 10-8 lead.
Late in the quarter Brielle Brower picked up her third foul however and back court running mate, Kylie Coby picked up her third foul midway through the second quarter and as that foul trouble mounted, the Lady Tigers wrestled the lead away, taking at 24-19 advantage at the half.
"We learned a lot about what we can do and what we need to work on tonight," Coach Smith said.
Out of the break both teams began to heat up from the field as the two teams traded baskets throughout the quarter. Idaho Falls got the better of the frame however as they outscored Blackfoot 17-11 despite a deep three ball from Blackfoot's leading scorer Cerissa Honena.
Honena finished with a team high 12 points for Blackfoot on 3 of 15 shooting while Blackfoot shot just 25% from the field as a team.
"I don't think that I have ever seen Cerissa struggle as much from the floor as she did tonight and I don't think that you ever will again," Coach Smith said. "I think that she might have been pressing a little bit with all the foul trouble that we were in."
The biggest thorn in the Blackfoot side was the play of Idaho Falls senior guard Hayley Farrer who filled the stat sheet for the Tigers with 24 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in the winning effort.
"We still have a lot of young players who aren't used to the varsity level yet," Coach Smith said. "Even though we lost we were right there up through the third quarter. We just need a little more confidence, especially on our shots. We showed a lot of improvement though and we will continue to improve and once we start to get it, we will take off."
Blackfoot (0-2) will open conference play next Tuesday when they host Hillcrest for a 7:30 tip off.
