Lady Tigers take a bite out of Lady Broncos

IDAHO FALLS — For the second time this week the Blackfoot Lady Broncos faced off with a 5A foe on the hardwood, this time at Idaho Falls were the Lady Tigers were equal to the task, sending Blackfoot packing with a 62-38 victory.
"There were times during that ball game that if we make our free throws and stop their offensive rebounds we are there, we are that close," Blackfoot head coach Mike Kirkham said. "I know it doesn't seem like that or look like it we just need to realize that we are close. I don't think that they have stopped playing hard though."
Blackfoot opened in a man-to-man defensive set and the Idaho Falls squad took advantage of some back door cuts, primarily from Hayley Farrer who scored 9 of her game high 19 in the opening quarter.
A pair of treys off the hand of Blackfoot sharpshooter Cerissa Honena kept the game close as Idaho Falls led 16-10 heading into the second quarter.
"We showed them their offense during practice and we didn't do a good job of defending it and finally we had to get out of it and go to the the zone and there we didn't have the size to compete inside with them," coach Kirkham said. "Size is no excuse for letting them get offensive rebounds off of missed free throws though."
Turnovers once again plagued the Lady Broncos, especially in the second quarter as Blackfoot turned the ball over 8 times, leading to a 15-8 quarter for the home team and heading into the break Blackfoot trailed 31-18.
Despite the rough start, Blackfoot continued to battle throughout the night however, but a 38-24 rebounding advantage by a bigger Idaho Falls squad proved to be more than the Lady Broncos could handle as they fell to 1-2 on the young season.
"They're coach just told me that they got beat in their last game real bad on their rebounding so they've been working on it and we obviously haven't," coach Kirkham said. "Games tend to show you what you need to work on so we have enough to choose from."
Blackfoot will have ten days off before there next game when they travel to Snake River for a renewal of that classic rivalry.
