Late Capson blast lifts Lady Broncos to game one win
Karissa Jensen slides in safe at third.
BLACKFOOT — Down to their last strike, the Blackfoot Lady Broncos got a big swing from Jessica Capson as she swatted a two out, three run homer over the left field fence for a walk off 5-3 win over Skyline in game one of their double header on Tuesday evening at Blackfoot High School.
"I was nervous," Capson said. "I have two strikes with runners at second and third and all I could think was now I have to swing at everything. Fortunately she put one where I could hit it and it felt great. I was pretty excited."
The opening game was a classic pitchers duel as Capson teamed with starting pitcher Makayla Rowsell as they matched Skylines Samantha Christensen pitch for pitch throughout the game.
"Samantha is a good pitcher and she threw a heck of a ball game for them," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "I have to tell you though, I was real comfortable with Jessica walking up to the plate there at the end and I am really proud of the way that these girls fought, battled and didn't hang their heads all the way to the end of the game."
Skyline took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning when they manufactured a run with a walk, sacrifice bunt and then a sacrifice fly.
Skyline picked up a quick pair of outs to begin the bottom of the seventh inning when Karissa Jensen wore a pitch to give the Lady Broncos the spark they needed.
Senior Brielle Brower, sporting a band-aid on her nose from a collision at third base earlier in the ball game then came through with a line drive single setting the stage for Capson's heroic blast.
"I'm just happy with the attitudes tonight," Coach Chavez said. "I'm looking forward to getting back into our conference play and I'm telling you, these girls are starting to click and there will no looking back."
Unfortunately, the momentum from game one didn't spill over into the the night cap as Skyline took advantage of 5 defensive miscues plus a couple of calls that didn't go their way in the 9-2 loss as Skyline salvaged a split of the evening.
Blackfoot (7-3, 4-0) will hit the road on Friday for a big High Country Conference double header at defending conference champion Hillcrest. First pitch is scheduled for 4 P.M.
