Laverne James Cody, 83

Laverne James Cody, 83, of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at his home from complications of diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease.
Laverne was born Aug. 12, 1929 in Wapello to Leslie Marion and Ella Loretta Adams Cody.  He attended school at Wapello and Shoshone, where he graduated the eighth grade.  He homesteaded in Shoshone with his parents, and he has lived in the Blackfoot area his adult life.
On June 10, 1950 he married Elsie Walters.  To this union seven children were born.  After 37 years of marriage they divorced.  On Dec.23, 1987 he married Belva Larsen Brower. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2005.
Laverne was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had served as deacons' advisor.
He worked as a welder, first for Spudnik and Custom Body in Blackfoot, then worked 36 years for J.R. Simplots Gay Mine before retiring as shop foreman.
Laverne loved making knick-knacks, finding treasures at garage sales, following his grandkids to their rodeos, making crafts and ornamental art out of metal.  With his incredible memory, he was able to remember all of the people he met and the places and dates that were important.
He is survived by his children, James Cody, Timothy (Ronda) Cody, Kitrena Pannel, Katie (Bill) Higgins, all of Blackfoot; stepchildren, Gaylen B. (Gail) Brower of Pocatello, Logan N. (Marilyn) Brower of American Falls, Rye (Ruthie) Brower of Firth, Bonnie Wise of Blackfoot, DeeAnn (Ron) Wilkins of Michigan; brother, Billy (Sandy) Cody of Arizona; sister, Harriet Snyder of Riverside; and numerous grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Belva; his parents; sons, Daniel, Steven and Michael Cody; and a sister, Dorothy Walquist.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot.  The family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. 
Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Shelley.
