Loyal E. Birchell, 96, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at the Bingham Memorial Extended Care Facility in Blackfoot.
Loyal was born on March 21, 1915 in Roosevelt, Utah to Ephriam Smith and Straussie May Schilslar Birchell. He was raised in the Roosevelt area, attended schools in Ouray and Vernal, and graduated from Roosevelt High School.
Loyal served in the Army 77th Division and was a part of the U.S. occupational force in Japan.
On Oct. 4, 1939 Loyal married Virginia Marie Wixom in Salt Lake City. Together they raised six children. She preceded him in death on March 17, 1989.
He served as captain at the Utah State Prison for 20 years. During this time he continued his education and earned a degree in sociology from Weber State College.
He was a member of the LDS church and served two missions with his wife to Indiana and Pennsylvania.
Loyal is survived by two sons, Loyal Jay of Idaho Falls and Bruce (Melba) of West Jordan, Utah; four daughters, Clara (John) Call of Blackfoot, Bonnie Ellen Birchell of Salt Lake City, Utah; Nancy (Keith) Wood of Kearns, Utah; and Evelyn (Paul) Abbey of Longmont, Colo.; sister Clara B. Price of Vernal, Utah; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at the Jordan River 6th Ward LDS Chapel, 7350 S. 1300 W. West Jordan, Utah. The family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow at the Draper City Cemetery in Utah.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling, Blackfoot, Idaho.
