Madison fourth quarter comeback downs Blackfoot

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos were hoping for a comeback after the first time they faced off against the Madison Bobcats. Although they did not swipe the win, they closed the gap from that first outing but still came up just short in the 55-45 defeat.
“It is a bit frustrating. We had them for three quarters, but we have not learned to finish the game,” Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said.
The Broncos tied up the score at 8-8 with :44 left of the first quarter when Dusti Rodriquez connected on a foul shot, and then ended the quarter ahead by two when Cassandra Clarke made two foul shots.
In the second quarter both teams dabbled for the lead until 3:50 was left when Cerissa Honena made a two point shot to put the Lady Broncos on top at 16-15. A minute later Honena was back with another basket advancing their lead to 18-15. Honena didn’t stop there, as she ran off five more points, including a deep three point basket as Honena lead the Broncos with 19 points on the evening. Honena and was followed by Clarke with 13 as the Broncos ended the first half with a 25-21 lead.
Blackfoot extended that lead to 37-31 after the end of three quarters of play as Honena and Clarke each dialed long distance for three point shots in the quarter.
All of that came quickly undone however as Madison mounted a comeback and with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter the visitors regained a lead that they never relinquished. All told, Madison outscored Blackfoot 24-8 in the fateful fourth quarter as they snuck away with the 55-45 victory.
“We had a lot of turnovers and that changed the tempo of the game. They are one of the top three teams, and tonight showed that we are able to play against them,” Smith said. “We were able to stop their inside game.”
Blackfoot (3-14, 1-7) will travel to Shelley on Tuesday for a game at 7:30.
