Martha Deon Gooch Ostergar Munson, 91, formerly of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 in Washington, Utah.
Deon was born Dec, 10, 1919 in Marriott, Weber County, Utah, to Joseph Henry and Martha Ritchie Gooch. She was the fifth child in a family of six. At the passing of her mother in 1923 the family moved to Riverside. Deon and her younger sister Myrtle stayed behind with their grandmother Ritchie for two years until Deon was old enough to attend school, at which time they joined the rest of the family in Riverside. She attended grade school at the old Riverside School and graduated from Moreland High School, as salutatorian, in 1937.
She married Allen Carlsen Ostergar in the Logan LDS Temple on June 3, 1938. They spent most of their married life in and around the Blackfoot area and were the parents of six children. She worked at various places during her lifetime: the INEEL site, State Hospital South and as receptionist for an optometrist and as a beautician. Allen preceded her in death in 1970. In 1971 she married J. Gordon Munson. He preceded her in death in 2002.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings including teacher, Primary president, counselor in the Young Women’s program, Junior Sunday School coordinator, Relief Society and Primary stake boards and as an officiator in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Deon was always optimistic during her trials, always finding something to be grateful for.
Her family was her greatest joy and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She had many hobbies: crocheting, oil painting, crossword puzzles, reading and cooking. She always seemed happiest when she was helping or doing something for someone else.
She is survived by her daughters: Judy Ellen (Delos) Elison of Toquerville, Utah; Carol Deon (Maurice) Backlund of Firth; Gaye Lyn (Steve) Jones, of Pingree; son, Allen Carlsen (Nancy) Ostergar, Jr. of Provo, Utah; 42 grandchildren, 131 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Besides her two husbands, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ruth Elma Thomson; a son, Joseph Dean Ostergar; sister, Mary Spencer; brothers Joseph Dean Gooch and Ritchie B. Gooch. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Lance Backlund and a granddaughter, Marissa Jones.
